About Hugo Inn
Our History
Built during the great American roadside motel boom, Dell's Motel opened its doors to travelers crossing the Eastern Plains of Colorado along U.S. Highway 40 — the storied transcontinental route that carried families, ranchers, and cross-country adventurers through Hugo long before the interstate era. Hugo was already a well-established stop on the Union Pacific Railroad main line, and the new motel gave road travelers the same warm welcome the railroad had offered for decades.
Hugo has served as the Lincoln County seat since 1909, a hub for the surrounding cattle ranches and wheat farms of the high plains. The Union Pacific Roundhouse — visible directly across the highway from the motel — once serviced steam locomotives and stands today as a landmark under active preservation. Guests at Dell's Motel could fall asleep to the distant sound of freight trains rolling east toward Kansas City and west toward Denver.
Over the following decades the property changed hands several times — a common story for independent roadside motels as interstate highways shifted traffic patterns across rural America. During its longest chapter it operated as The Trailblazer Motel, a name that fit the spirit of the wide-open Colorado plains and the independent travelers who called it home for a night or a week.
In 2016 new ownership took over with a clear vision: restore the motel to its mid-century heyday while adding the modern comforts today's travelers expect — all at honest, affordable prices. The name was changed to The Hugo Inn to honor the town it has served for generations. Since then, every room has been remodeled, the grounds refreshed, and the spirit of classic Colorado hospitality brought back to life on 4th Street.
